Trouble installing VMWare on Fedora Core 8

Hello,

I am very new to Linux.
When I try to install VMWare server 1.4 on Fedora Core 8, it's telling me that I have to compile it myself. When I try to do that, I get the following error message:

The directory of kernel headers (version 2.6.23.1-49.fc8) does not match your
running kernel (version 2.6.21-2950.fc8xen).

Have you ever come across this? What should I do?

Thanks,

Avrohom

Boot the system to the 2.6.23.1-49 kernel.

Thanks! That did the trick. Although, VMware still did not compile, and gave me an error message about some inconsistancy with the kernel.

Try one more time, you may want to download/extract/run-me.pl the the latest vmware-any-any-update;

Thanks for the link. I downloaded it. The compilation seemed to go alot smoother, however, it still died in middle and told me there is some inconsistency with the kernel. I'm using 2.6.23.1-49 kernel.

Thanks,

Avrohom

Well without any knowledge of what this inconsistency with the kernel is I cannot help. I suggest you visit at the vmware forums for further assistance;

Do you have the kernel-devel package installed?

Hi!

This readme describes
this "package", which should fix all your problems compliling VMWARE on Fedora Core.
Of course you need the matching kernel headers.
