Trouble installing Linux on Toshiba Satellite Pro M40
 

Hello All

I'm a newbie to Linux though I've got Mandriva and Red Hat on PCs. I've recently bought a Toshiba Pro M40 with XP Home on it.

I wanted to install Linux on the machine so used Mandriva 2006 on it with the standard graphics screen. The splash screen with the progress bar went to about 80% then blacked out then returned with the next screen with the progress bar at the bottom and froze. Trying with text only mode and Logs I get as far as:-

the PCMCIA probe seems to work as we get

then flashing cursor and nothing happens until the power is switched off.

I'm at a loss as my previous installs have gone without a hitch.:scratch:

The machine spec is XP home 5.1.2600 SVPk 2
Celeron 1.6Gh
0.5Gb ram
60Gb HDD
Video ATI Radeon Xpress 200M vers 6.14.10.6539 1280x800 resolution
Matshita DVD

Any ideas please?

It appears to be PCMCIA. Do you *HAVE* to have pcmcia during install (are you using any cards in the slot during install?). Some installers have a boot option to instruct the kernel not to probe or install modules for the pcmcia card. If you dont need it during install, look at your boot options to disable it. You can always 'tinker' with it after install to get it working.

Thanks for the info but I do not have a card in the slot. As it happens I've found another item which suggests I install using 'noauto' and it worked. However I've now got another problem which is the ATI card is not recognised but the forums have an answer to that as well except that I can only get the command line screen which is not a lot of use. I'll hunt the HOW-Tos to see if they can assist as Ill have to download the driver on another machine and then install it on the laptop Hey-Ho!
