Tried Ubuntu 6.10 with Pavillion DV5118TX (Duo Core, SATA, nVidia) ???
Hi,
Has anyone tried Ubuntu 6.10 with Pavillion DV5118TX? I am asking this because I tried Ubuntu 6.06 with this laptop I have (dual boot with originally XP Home) and it totally messed up my system. It installed perfectly but then failed to boot into GUI and always remains on Command line. Startx and init5 do not work. I do not know what it is the problem as this laptop has Hitachi SATA HDD, nVidia GE Force Go 7400 Graphics card and Intel Duo Core 1.66 GHz processor.
I have Ubuntu 6.10 with me and I am afraid to install it now as I had reinstalled Windows XP on my system and completely washed the HDD again. I do not want to mess it up again. Some say that it is due to SATA, some say it is due to Graphics card. Can anyone please help? If anyone has tested this with similar laptop or PC, please let me know.
Thanks
AJ

Hi,
there is nothing to worry as long as you have spare partition !
Yesterday I've installed Ubuntu 6.10 twice on my laptop - Core Duo 2GHz, ATI x1600, SATA etc. - one installation took me 1 hr together with system configuration and extra packages installation.
If you have any doubts - ask. Only step you should be careful is partitioning, if done properly - you can always remove Ubuntu and still have you windows running.

Thanks a lot Sir. I know I can always do that. I have a 20GB partition which is NTFS currently but changes can be made. Only thing I want to know is that if I do install GRUB over the windows bootloader, I just do not like it if the linux does not work.
Moreover, if I remove linux, the bootloader screws up the whole system. What do you suggest?
Regards,
AJ

thank you sir. I was wondering if I install Ubuntu and it does not work well, then what options do I have to remove GRUB and run windows as before? I do not want GRUB to mingle with it then.

There is no problem with restoring bootsector after removing linux.
Insert an XP installation CD and enter setup mode. Choose the recovery option and boot to the DOS command line.
Execute the command "FIXMBR" and reboot. The "FIXMBR" command re-initializes the MBR with NTLDR.
But I think you will stay with Ubuntu after proper configuration.

Marcin
