Trackpoint Thinkpad R40 Kanotix 2005-4

I am currently running Kanotix on a Thikpad R40. When the computer is booted the settings for the trackpoint are all the "default" settings. In order the change the settings located at:

in files sensitivity, speed, inertia, etc.

I must attempt to change the file (in root by the way) and save the changes. It immediately tells me that the changes cannot be saved. I then must attempt to close the file and "discard" any changes made to the values. Once that discard goes through OK I can then go back and edit the file. This works fine except for the time it takes to make these changes each time I reboot the laptop.

I cannot seem to make these changes permanent.

I cannot seem to find the script that specifies the "default" settings either.

If anyone knows how to make these changes permanent any help would be greatly appreciated. I hate having to drag around another pointing device just to be comfortable quickly.
