tp 600


im new to linux. i have a thinkpad 600 and i need some help.... just a little, like which files do dl and how to install linux.

It all depends on what distribution you want to run. Ubuntu is a Debian based distribution that is getting very popular. You can view the download mirrors and download the latest installation CD image (named ubuntu-5.04-install-i386.iso). Burn it to CD and boot from it, that's how simple it is.

You may want to refer to the documentation (on the disc and on the website) and the forums as well.

Ubuntu should work pretty well on a TP600 series laptop.

which would be the best to install on the 600? would mandrake be a good one?

I suggested Ubuntu, didn't I?

Mandrake was, at least the last time I tried it, a bit bloated and unprofessional. That might have changed if I believe current Mandrake users, but I think using KDE on a Thinkpad 600 is a tad on the heavy side.

Problems

when I try to install Ubuntu everytime im in the base system process it keeps stopping at the 6% mark saying that it cant retrieve usbutils. (i think thats how its spelled.) can you guys help me out?
