Toshiba Tecra 8000, SuSE 8.2, Linksys WPC11 v.3, and SMC Wireless Router issues

Decide I has better start a new thread because I've already tried everything I have tracked down on this and other forums, so here goes.

I am currently dual booting a Toshibe Tecra 8000 laptop with XP and SuSE 8.2 installed. Everything installed fine except (you guessed it ) the wireless network card. This is the second card as the first, a D-Link DWL-650+, is proven not to work with Linux (Texas Instrument Chip). So I purchased, a hard to find, Linksys WPC11 v.3 and have not been able to get it to work. I have tried modifying files as other within this forum have to no avail, so any help would be appreciated:

Setup:

SMC 2404WBR router with WEP disabled currently, auto speed, static ip addresses (I use mac filtering).

Linksys WPC11 v.3 FCC ID PKW-WPC11-V31

(I have no problems with this setup under XP)

output of cardctl indent

Socket 0:
product info: "The Linksys Group, Inc.", "Instant Wirless Network PC Card", "ISL37300P", "RevA"
manfid: 0x0274, 0x1613

output of lsmod (relative info)
Module Not tainted
prism2_cs (not used) line4
p80211 [prism2_cs] line5
ds [prism2_cs] line6
yenta_socket line7
pcmcia_core [prism2_cs ds yenta_socket]

output of lspci -n

If anymore info is needed please let me know

Thanks in advance for the help

I'm assuming you've read this post:
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...threadid=38579

It looks like a lot of the necessary pieces are already in place, I'd also like to see the output of ifconfig -a, iwconfig and the related lines from dmesg, eg: the ones following the line in dmesg that reads "Linux Kernel Card Services Kernel Version", or similar. Also, if you could do a grep -i card /var/log/messages | grep 'Jul 19' (use the date of your last actual boot-up, single digits preceded by a space, eg: 'Jul 4') that may also help.

I did read that particular thread but I could not find hermes.conf with my / directory. Apparently since 8.0 SuSE has taken everything and put it in the /etc/pcmcia directory, but I still did not find hermes.conf under search file her*.*

ouptu is as follows:

linux:~ #
apparently my ESSID is not set even though SuSE says it is so I am not sure as to where to configure or how to use command line because YAST is not doing it's job

Thanks again

Sorry for the long output but I wasn't sure of what was essential

looks like you're getting partial support, these 2 lines are telling:

Jul 19 14:54:04 linux cardmgr[995]: socket 0: Bromax OEM 11Mbps 802.11b WLAN Card (Prism 3)
Jul 19 14:54:04 linux cardmgr[995]: executing: 'insmod -v /lib/modules/2.4.20-4GB//pcmcia/prism2_cs.o'

your card is a prism 3 but the driver is a prism2. I'll look into where to get that module and get back to you.

in the meantime could you post the output of lsmod?

lsmod output

It seems that the orinoco driver may work, but how do I switch? Also still can not find out where to my ESSID it still comes up blank. I'm trying to learn command line but the flags are confusing.

output lsmod

sorry about the delay in getting back to you, was in the middle of installing slack 9 on an old, really slow notebook.

anyway, regarding orinoco, looks as though it's already inserted and running, this makes me think you need to locate the hermes.conf file and see what it says.

In the meantime, you can try some manual config from the console just to test things out. Let's begin:
1. ifconfig wlan0 192.168.2.2
2. iwconfig wlan0 essid <your router's essid name goes here, in quotes if it contains spaces> rate 11M key off channel <your router's channel # goes here>
3. iwconfig - and see if your router's mac address shows up on this line Mode:Auto Channel:0 Access Point: 00:00:00:00:00:00

4. If it does, add a gateway to routing table:route add default gw 192.168.2.1
5. then, try to ping the router: ping 192.168.2.1
6. then, try to ping the web: ping cnet.com

if the above is functional, then we can automate all this. If not, we'll have to see why, although you're very close, as your card's mac address is recognized, always a good sign .

Sorry it took so long just got a chance to sit down at the computer again.

Tried what you posted here is the output:

ifconfig wlan0 192.168.2.2

returned: SIOCSIFADDR: No such device

iwconfig wlan0 essid "router name"

returned: Error for wireless request "Set ESSID" (8B1A) :
SET failed on device wlan0; No such device

I appreciate your patient and help hope this helps

I'm in the same boat

Hello Kevin, I hope you don't mind me jumping in the thread here. I have the exact same setup as you, and I'm having the same problems you are.

When I run "iwconfig wlan0" I get the following:

wlan0 IEEE 802.11-b ESSID:""
Mode:Managed Frequency:2.462GHz Access Point: 00:C0:02:DA:49:08
Bit Rate:2Mb/s Tx-Power:2346 dBm
Retry min limit:8 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off
Encryption key:off
Link Quality:68/92 Signal level:-51 dBm Noise level:-98 dBm
Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0

So far, so good. The ESSID bit is blank, so I try to set it with "iwconfig wlan0 essid "Over Here" ". To which the beast responds:

Error for wireless request "Set ESSID" (8B1A) :
SET failed on device wlan0 ; Function not implemented.

From what i can tell that command syntax is correct, what's the problem? Can you set your essid, or do you get the same error?

Kevin,
you need to return your system to the setup it had in post #3 above, eg: ifconfig -a shows a wlan0 device, apparently something has changed if you're getting "no such device" errors when attempting to address wlan0, because at one point it was there and had an interrupt, io address and your card's mac address listed. The question is, as things are now, does ifconfig -a still show the wlan0 device?

DustOff, you're problem is entirely different at this point. Take a look at the output of iwconfig: you are already associated with an access point and you're even showing a signal level related to that connection; essid doesn't matter at that point. I have a card that *never* reports essid as anything but blank, yet works fine. All you need to do is give wlan0 a valid address on your network, add a route naming your wireless router or access point as the default gateway for wlan0 and you should be able to ping the world. If you have wep enabled on your router, then you'll need to set that up using iwconfig, if you have mac filtering on your router, you'll need to add your card to it's list. You're 99% setup.

Beavis, I'm just now noticing that the wireless card I configured in yast2 is called "eth-pcmcia". II'm guessing that is some crap that yast2 made up, because i deleted it from yast2 and wlan0 is still up. I'm trying to figure this out from the man pages, but I can't quite get it working.

Assuming that yast2's eth-pcmcia is crap, how do I configure wlan0 to get it's ip from dhcp / set its default route?

Excuse me, I used to be irish ;)

Dust,
If you have dhcpcd installed (which dhcpcd should return something), then use this: /<path returned above goes here>/dhcpcd <your router's hostname/ip goes here> wlan0.

Also, I'm guessing the eth-pcmcia is a symlink to wlan0, explaining why you could delete it and wlan0 is still there.

I found dhcpcd in /sbin.

Jusst wanted to clarify, I want the router/ap's dhcp service to assign my laptop's wireless card an address. And I'm assuming I need to point eth0's default route at the router, but I can't figure out how to do that either.

The penguin frustrates, because my goal is painfully close ;0

Sorry to post this to that thread, but this bbs won't let me PM for some reason...

It won't allow a pm unless you're a contributor ($), c'mon, contribute! it's cheap *and* fun! (shameless plug for LQ, ends...)

Ok, there are 2 other possible dhcp clients, dhclient and pump, type "which <name>" at console to see if they are installed and you have access to them. Logging in as root may allow you access to prog's you otherwise would not have access to, so I recommend that for this exercise.

Oh, I am so going to send some money the way of this bbs. You've been extremely helpfull, and it looks like that's a universal thing here. Wicked cool, and deserving of my hard earned bucks!

I opened a terminal window, typed su and then my pass. I tried 'which <both dhcp clients>". No error message, no confirmation. I'm gonna go over to root and see if that changes anything.

Oops, your last post leap-frogged me, ok, well try "/sbin/dhcpcd router-hostname device_name".
examples:
(I have my wireless router in my /etc/hosts as "192.168.2.1 wrouter" so the just the name works, take a look at that file to see where/how to add yours)

dhcpcd -h wrouter eth0 <-- configs eth0 to get ip and route via dhcp from wireless router

dhcpcd -h 192.168.2.1 wlan0 <-- configs wlan0....

note: oops forgot the "-h" business...

by the way. try 'man dhcpcd' to see all options for your version.
