Toshiba tecra 8000 fan on when recharging battery

Hi,

I have a Toshiba Tecra 8000 laptop with PII 400Mhz CPU and 128MB RAM. It currently runs Gentoo with kernel 2.6.11-r5, ACPI support is enabled (it has an ACPI bios) and APM support is disabled.
When I need to recharge the battery, the fan turns on and stays on (regardless of cpu load) untill the battery is fully recharged. But when I check the fan state during this activity, I get the following weird answer:
Code:
# cat /proc/acpi/fan/FAN/state
status: off
Why is the fan turning on? And why is this event not registered? I also experienced this problem when it ran Windows 2000, so I think it may not be OS specific. Nonetheless, I would really appreciate it if anyone with the same laptop could tell me if this is normal behavior or that something is wrong in the bios or with the hardware.
Thanks in advance.

JJ

CPU fan on when charging cells.

May i just point out the reason for the system fan NOT being registered in ANY OS when charging bataries. In turbo mode the bios overrides the OS state and automatically switches on the fan.

Some linux virsions don't seem to be able to understand the over-riding of the fan, so it keeps the fan state off, untill the system temp gets to above 65 in turbo mode.

This is standard practise in the turbo mode. If you would like to change this state, go into the bios and change the CPU mode to normal and the cells will charge without the fan being switched on. However, if the system gets too hot, the fan will only come on when at about 75-80C and not when it reaches a temp of 65C when turbo mode is activated. the fan being on isn't a problem in itself, it's the laptops own protection method. I've happily run my system now for 4 days without the system fan being on, because mine is quite old and bashed and does make a racket and it's fine, runs nicely on simple progs and hasn't froze yet!

allthough before this it used to switch the fan on allmost all the time, so the system doesn't get too hot. THIS IS A FEATURE OF THE NEW BIOS AVAILABLE FROM THE TOSHIBA WEBSITE AND CAN BE PROGRAMED TO YOUR REQUIREMENTS UNDER THE USER SETTING OF THE APPLICABLE FIELD.

Any more help required just e-mail me through LQ.org. taaa
