Go to www.alsa-project.org to get the latest alsa driver for your card. 2 helpful other sites are: http://linux.toshiba-dme.co.jp/linux/ and http://newsletter.toshiba-tro.de/main/index.html - it took me lots of searching to find them. BTW, the 2nd site, though far more helpful is really slow - it's them not you.

I already have the newest drivers from alsa installed. http://linux.toshiba-dme.co.jp/linux/ and http://newsletter.toshiba-tro.de/main/index.html don't mention my laptop at all (A45-S120). Ive also run alsaconf and alsamixer, but I still don't have any sound.

What are all those modules for? Looks like you have some OSS modules in there as well (if not all of them).... I'm using straight ALSA with the same sound chip with no probs....

i810_audio 25272 0
ac97_codec 13640 0 [i810_audio]

00:1f.5 Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corp. 82801CA/CAM AC'97 Audio (rev 01)

If I were you, and I'm not, but; If I were you, I'd recompile my kernel. Only 2 things need to be selected under the "sound" heading for functioning sound(with the 2.4.x kernels).... Judging from your lsmod, well... I don't know except that it looks to be a mess.....

<*> Sound card support
<M> Intel ICH (i8xx), SiS 7012, NVidia nForce Audio or AMD 768/811x

Build them both as static and forget about the modules completely if you wish. It's guaranteed to work then.... It should anyway... This is one reason why I don't like modules for key hardware support... If they are in-house then you don't have to worry about other possible factors preventing your modules from working correctly... I just recently switched over to a module for expiermentation purposes

Jon

The alsamixer comes muted but you said you already tried that... Also, /etc/hotplug/blacklist prevents those modules from loading but they look like they are loaded so..... Don't know what else to suggest but to try and tweak your kernel....

I use KDE and so have to open kmix - normally sound is muted by default and you have to unmute it manually - have you done this?

Uh, yea... On first boot it is muted. alsamixer, aumix or kmix.... It's all the same.. Just different frontends to the same sound mixer.... He already tried alasamixer tho..

Yeah, I have unmuted all the sound upon first boot with alsamixer and saved it. Just for kicks I installed suse 9.0 and everything worked, even sound. But I don't want to have to switch distros just for sound. especially since suse is kinda bloated.

re-installed slackware after i tested the sound with suse and still wasnt getting any sound. I took jong's advice and turned off oss emulation and now just using pure alsa. sound works now, but still wondering why it would work with oss under suse but not slack. oh well, no harm done. thanks again.
