laptop toshiba satellite pro has a dual boot- windows 7 and ubuntu 10.04. Am failing to connect wireless using ubuntu but mananging Windows 7. No wireless network is being detected. Please help

I have Toshiba Satellite L500 and similar problem with 10.04.
First, try 10.10, at least in Live mode. If 10.10 determines your WiFi card, then you obviously should upgrade your 10.04 to 10.10. Mine worked this way.
Second, if 10.10 is still of no help, then you need to determine which WiFi card you have (Win7 can help you with this) and then search for drivers.

it seems that the apropriate module which is "rt2860sta" is loaded. But there are other modules loaded for Ralink-wireless-chips which seem redundant to me. I'd recommend to blacklist the other modules and try out if wireless works as desired afterwards.
At first you may execute the command

this gives a more verbose output. Look at the section for the Wireless-adapter, the first line is
