Unhappy Toshiba Satellite P10-554 - linux ready?

My hardware is a Toshiba Satellite P10-554:
P4 2.8 Ghz HT, 512 Mb RAM, 60 Gb HDD, nVidia GeForce FX card with 64Mb VRAM, Matsushita DVD RAM CDD... and I use a Xentrix 7005Q2 ADSL USB modem for internet.

I am making a total mess playing with some Live CDs (Mepis / Knoppix / Ubuntu) & Red Hat FC1 + SuSe 10.0 with similar problems... no ASDL support (haven't tried any hacks as not pro enuff)... screen size suffers with RH FC1 inspite of selecting the correct card...SuSe DVD gives errors during install... some dont let me see the MS NTFS partitions...

I am dying to throw MS XP Prof out of the window ()

Given the hardware, has anyone with the same sys been 'totally' satisfied with any particular distro? Please suggest? Any one has some suggestions before I crash my HDD?

Check out:

I have a Fujitsu Seimens Amilo 1630 with Debian Unstable and... so far....the only thing not working is the SD card reader

I had troubles with USB modems even in my windows days (a month ago). I recommend an Ethernet one..

P10, running Mandriva well, but no wireless yet

I have installed Mandriva 2006 on my satelite P10 with good success. Everything seemed to be found by the install system, except the atheros based wifi, lucent based modem, and the little Toshiba utilities for the power management.

I have since installed drivers for all of these, and the only thing that is not working now is the wifi. . . and I am sure that it is the configuration, so I am working through that.

So. . . . so far so good.
