Toshiba Satellite A65 Dual Boot Overheats with Fedora only
 

I have a Toshiba Satellite A65-S126, I installed Fedora Core in a Dual Boot with Windows XP. Everything went smooth. Now my laptop will overheat and shut down only when running Fedora. Windows XP Works great. Any Help?

as far s i know there is a module APCI in kernek 2.6 which has sub modules for fan ,battery etc

i haven't used a laptop so i do not have mpore ides,maybe it has something to do with the functoning of the kernel,whether it has the modules loaded in to it or not

Same problem for me install SUSE 9.2 on a new Toshiba Satellite A65-S1068. What little I ran WinXP, it never overheated, but as soon as I installed SUSE 9.2, every time it dual boots into GRUB, the fan starts & then turns off. I run it until I get the CPU overheating popup from the Kernel, then I immediately power down & reboot. This time, because the heatsink is already hot, the fan stays on for good.

In order to generate the system initially, I had to use the INSTALL NO ACPI entry to get SUSE to load, so the problem may indeed be with the ACPI/fan functionality on Toshiba's.

If you Google toshiba + satellite + fan + overheat , you will get almost 720 hits that will give you some very interesting reading.

If your machine is still under warranty, get Toshiba to replace the fan & heatsink to eliminate them as culprits. Otherwise, do the extra reboot like I do and live with it.

put echo "force_on:1" > proc/acpi/fan/FAN1/state in rc.local to turn the fan on if you don't want a sudden shut down due to overheating.

Overheating on Toshiba A65-S1068 Satellite when running Linux
 

I have SUSE 9.2 installed on a Toshiba A65-S1068 with the GRUB dual boot; both OS modules boot up and fly once I got past a few installation errors (had to shrink the XP size way down).

Soon I noted that whenever I ran XP for limited testing, the fan always worked normally. However, when running SUSE 9.2, I noted that sometimes the fan wasn't running and I got kernel popups about the CPU overheating. I immediately shutdown, and rebooted SUSE again. This time, because the heatsink was already hot, the fan fired up & ran forever after.

The problem for me arose because I had to use the INSTALL NO ACPI option in order to get a working version of SUSE 9.2 loaded & running. By disabling ACPI, it looks to me like the fan isn't getting the CPU signal to turn on before it melts down. There is another post on this board from another contributing member about using the command echo "force_on:1" > proc/acpi/fan/state in rc.local; I'll let you go search for it.

Until I get a working ACPI module installed on the S1068, I just wait for the kernel popup, then reboot, the fan fires up like a cyclone (it's multi speed remember) & cools everything down to normal and stays that way.
