Toshiba Modem works, kppp does not.

Many thanks to all that gave advice and hints to help me get my modem working.

I have a toshiba 2410 and after much fuss I finally got it to install, it sets up automatically on boot up, but then when I try to dial out with kppp, it says "modem is busy".

modprobe comes back with no errors.

more advice would be a good thing

thanks again

You can try two things:

1. Type fuser -m <the servial port device you're using for your modem> (e.g. fuser -m /dev/ttyS0). This will return a pid (process identity) number that is using that device and a letter (e.g. 523r). Do a ps -p <the pid you gleaned from fuser>. Then do a man fuser and match the letter from fuser ("r" in the above example) to one of the letters in the manpage. This procedure will tell you which process/app (if any) is using the device and in what manner. Post results here.

2. Run minicom. If you don't have it it will probably be on your distro CD. Then try sending some AT commands to the modem.
