toshiba laptop and linux mint with mate

My laptop (Toshiba Satelite) will not suspend when i tell it to or when i shut the lid on battery power... as far as i can tell it tries.. it starts the process but just locks the screen after the screen flashes on and off several times(obviously i can only tell that when i manually tell it to suspend via the desktop. is there a setting somewhere i need to change/fix?

not to sound prude but yes i know mate is relatively new and is not mainstream. I have tried gnome 3.x but do not like it and will not settle with it. if your advise is just to use gnome 3 or KDE please don't waste your time if I settle for something it will be Windows or ldxe or something else other than gnome 3.

I doubt this has anything to do with MATE, as MATE is just a desktop.

More likely, it is something underneath. The user-agent icon with your post says "Ubuntu." Is this MATE with Ubuntu?

I did find a thread on the Ubuntu forums about problems suspending a Toshiba, but I can't tell whether it's the same model. Maybe it will help:

If not, please post what Linux distro/version you are using and what specific model Toshiba you are dealing with.

You might also try suspending it from the command line and capturing any error messages. Here's an article on how to do that if you are using the pm-utils package, which is default for a number of Linux distros, including, according to the article, "RHEL, Fedora, CentOS, Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Debian, Ubuntu."
