I have not used ubuntu but there must be a configuration utility through which you can choose your layout of the keyboard. I believe the Kde-control panel also includes a keyboard tab through which you can choose the layout.
If you are a bit tecnical ,
usually the keyboard layout are stored in
/usr/lib/kbd/keymaps/i386/qwerty
now you need to use the loadkeys command to load the layout that is in your keyboard
read the man pages of keymaps ,loadkeys to know how to do it.
If you have a /etc/sysconfig/keyboard file , you may ONLY need to edit this file to make the changes.
For example my file contains
KEYBOARD=us
KEYTABLE=us

Hi rch,
thank you for your reply,

but i dont have any of the two files you talked about,

but if it can help, i have with gnome a keyboard utility to choose the keyboard language and layout, i succeed to put in UK,
but that's not the problem, the problem is to choose the kind of keyboard it is , i can choose in like 40 models:
Hewlet Packard Internet Keyboard
Hewler Packard multimedia
Generic 101
Toshiba Satellite (it doesnt work )
etc...

That's my question ,
if someone have a clue, it will be very very helpful,

thanks a lot ;-)

i understand your problem - the problem is still associated with loadkeys and keymaps
naturally a keyboard is automatically detected by the computer --so it should not be a problem
now what you can do is (if it is not detected and you still have problem)
use
dumpkeys
now save the output of the dumpkeys to a file and after editing(what changes that you want to do) load the file.
or better yet use
lineakd

well, i'm a bit lost now...
i dont really know how to use dumpkeys but i tried to find some clues in the man, didnt suceed

i tried 'loadkeys uk' then i restarted X, it worked.
but after a reboot, back to reality, the us keyboard was here...

i noticed that in the /etc/X11/xorg.conf it's still us keyboard...
when i type 'uk' instead of 'us', then i reboot the xserver, i have an error message, it tells that 'uk' is not recognized

could you tell me more about lineakd?

edit :
i tried lineakd, but its only for Internet shortcut on the keyboard isnt it?

thanks again rch ;-), we're gonna find the solution!

It's ok. But the point is that when you search for solutions you get one. When I was in Switzerland I had a even more weird problem- they had a particular key layout which I could not follow- (the keyboard symbols were meant to be used for both french and German -should i say -layout)- I solved the problem by tweaking with dumpkeys.
