Toshiba A15 lap question

Hi everyone,
I've update my linux kernel to 2.6.6, and found it great to use. But I cannot use my cd-rom now. When I try to mount it in my terminal, it dis "is not a block device". However, when booting with my 2.4.22, it works. I don't know why. Could anyone give me some advice?

my laptop pc
toshiba-a15
cd-rom: combo

system
redhat-fedora core1
kernel 2.6.6
Tks

Luke
