thinkpad x60s cdrom install issue

Hello

I received my second-user Thinkpad x60s today and have come across a problem I have never encountered before. My external cd-rom drive normally works and is recognised by my Thinkpad.
I have set the bios to boot from my Freecom external drive but boot fails with Ubuntu, Debian and Zenwalk.
The error message (?) with Debian is:
ISOLINUX 3.02 Debian-2009-06-09 ETCD
...and there the system stops.

As I said, I have never encountered this before. The external drive is okay on another system.

Thanks
