ThinkPad W520 (nVidia & USB 3.0)

Hi all,

I have some new ThinkPad W520s. They come with NVIDIA Quadro 2000M graphics and USB 3.0 ports(2). I recently installed RHEL5.5 (need it for other applications, can't change version yet), and had an issue getting the NVIDIA driver package to work.

Graphics drivers: What I figured out today was that there was a Display option in the BIOS which needed to be changed in order for the drivers to work. Changed "NVIDIA Optimus" setting to "Discreet Graphics" for the display and it now seems to be working ok. Now that the graphics is working properly, I can set it up for twin view or dual display. However, on my Cannon S60 projector the lettering is really blurred,(Works just fine in Win7, audio too). I am connecting via an HDMI cable into a display port adapter. Any help there is greatly appreciated.

USB 3.0 ports: They do not work, and the kernel doesn't seem to recognize them. Does anyone have a driver package which may work with RHEL 5.5?

This beats me: you need RHEL in a laptop because of some other applications! Would Fedora run the same applications? Everything in RHEL may be outdated -as they want a very stable/secure OS for SERVERS. You are welcome to try to compile and install the kernel by yourself if you so desire.

My recommendation: Use RHEL 5.5 in a virtual machine for that "other applications", as host OS use a distro with more up to date kernel for the USB 3.0 support.
