Thinkpad T410 graphics issues / Intel HD Graphics

I recently installed Mepis 8.5 on a Thinkpad T410. Other than some tweaking, everything is running fine.

However, I can't use the display's default resolution: 1440 X 900. The highest I can go is 1280 X 800. I believe this is due to the Thinkpad's Intel HD Graphics, which is integrated on the motherboard.

Seen below indicating that the device is not recognized by the kernel:

*-display UNCLAIMED
description: VGA compatible controller
product: Core Processor Integrated Graphics Controller
vendor: Intel Corporation
physical id: 2
bus info: pci@0000:00:02.0
version: 02
width: 64 bits
clock: 33MHz
capabilities: msi pm vga_controller bus_master cap_list
configuration: latency=0

lspci tells me:

00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Core Processor Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 02)

I have the Intel i5 chipset.

So I went to http://intellinuxgraphics.org/2009Q4.html and wgot xf86-video-intel-2.10.0.tar.bz2.

I unpacked it in /usr/src, cd'ed to the directory and ran ./configure. I received the following error:

-----------------------------------------
checking for XORG... configure: error: Package requirements (xorg-server >= 1.6 xproto fontsproto xineramaproto randrproto renderproto xextproto x11 xextproto) were not met:

Requested 'xorg-server >= 1.6' but version of xorg-server is 1.4.2
No package 'x11' found

Consider adjusting the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable if you
installed software in a non-standard prefix.

Alternatively, you may set the environment variables XORG_CFLAGS
and XORG_LIBS to avoid the need to call pkg-config.
See the pkg-config man page for more details.
-----------------------------------------

I went to Synaptic and found that there are many x11 packages to be found, some installed but many not installed. But I would be floundering if I just started blindly installing packages...

My questions:

Am I going in the right direction? Do you think installing this driver is the right approach?

Where would I look for a .deb for the driver?

What about the other option re: environment variables? Smart or not? How would I do this?

Thank you for any insight.

O dear, if I'm the most informed respondent you get, lotsa luck, but here goes.
I'm STILL looking for a way to display my mp4 vids in such a way as I can see more than 25% of picture.in ANY player, and I'm at largest res. offered, 1024x768.

But. "xrandr" in terminal..is relevant to the subject at least.
