Thinkpad T21 suse 10 shutdown problem

I have a problem when shutting down my computer from gnome.
Its a Thinkpad T21 laptop.
Everything works fine up until it says:

proc umounted
The system will now be halted

Then it just stands there without turning of the computer...
I can hear the fan stop and i can use my keyboard to write stuff on the empty line.
I have to hold my power button for 7 seconds to get it to shut down...
Very annoying.

Rebooting works fine, it reboots at the same point.

Anyone had the same problem?

what distro are you using?

specs buddy. the more the better. i get the same thing on a ibm thinkpad 600 with 2.4.31 kernel. but kernel 2.6.13 does it fine

still, kernel 2.6 is wacky maaaan. you gotta be careful duuude.

Sounds like you need to start ACPI/APM (modprobe maybe?).

This is a kernel problem. The older Thinkpads have a problem with their BIOS. To solvie it you have to recompile the kernel and set the option in
Power Management Options > APM Bios Support > "Use real mode APM Bios call to power off" to YES. After recompiling the kernel it should work.

Oh, I forgot... Does anyone here know how to generate rpm's from the kernel sources?
(I want to change this option the SUSE People didn't set to yes and I have to install Suse 10.0 one mor than one thinkpad...

I have just resolved the exact same problem with SuSe 10.0 and my ThinkPad A22P by first entering "acpi=off" at GRUB startup (F2 key). With that the shutdown worked properly. To make it permanent "acpi=off" was added to the kernel line in /boot/grub/menu.lst.
