thinkpad i1400 series keyboard doesn't work on xfree86/icewm

Bear with me since I'm a newb with linux, but here's my problem. I installed debian on my old thinkpad i1400 series, and basically followed the directions from another site (I can't post the link, since I don't have five posts yet)
It works fine (the keyboard) under the terminal (before I loaded any GUI). This is the procedure I took (per the tutorial I linked previously) after installing the base system.

# apt-get update

# apt-get install icewm

# apt-get install xserver-xfree86

# apt-get install x-window-system-core

# apt-get install xdm

# apt-get install numlockx

# apt-get install xterm

Once I started up with "startx" I bootd fine, but had a problem, and that is that when I type a "P" I get a "*" instead, when I type an "O" i get a "6" and so on. For some reason it's typing in the laptops secondary keys, that are printed in the lower right hand corner of the key itself, and not the primary keys, which I need of course.

I've already tried running the command dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86 and tried switching to other keyboards (101, 102, 104 keys, etc) but without success. Any ideas?

Well, I did some more toying around, and I've got good news and bad news. Good news is, I found out that I need to hit the numlock key to make it work normally, and the bad news is of course, that I'm an idiot .
