Question Synaptics touchpad + USB Logitech MX 700, wheel not working under 2.6 (Mdk 10.0)

I have a Dell Latitude C600, which has as built-in synaptics touchpad.

Under Mandrake 9.2 I could set XFree 86 to use Protocol "Auto" on "dev/psaux", plug my MX700 in with PS/2 adapter supplied and get the wheel and some of the extra buttons on the mouse to work when it was plugged in, while falling back to the touchpad when it wasn't.

I've upgraded to Mandrake 10.0 with 2.6.3 and (for various reasons moved the mouse to USB and now my X configuration uses /dev/mice and the kernel detects both mice but I can't get the wheel or extra buttons to work.

Any ideas?
