Suspend problems with Dell M1210 w/ NVidia...
 

I have been messing around with this thing for two months now. I have Kubuntu 6.10 installed, and kernel 2.6.20, but the kernel version doesn't seem to matter, since this problem has happened with all I have tried.

It goes like this: I suspend my laptop, wake it up, and sometimes it works fine. Sometimes, it just locks that whole computer, sometimes it just reboots instantly, sometimes I get this weird problem where everything starts disappearing. This is my biggest gripe. Some times I can go for a week or two, sometimes it happens within two suspend-wakeup cycles.

Another problem that I have is that suspending seemingly kills all the terminals, so I can't go Ctrl+Alt+F1 to go to a terminal. The screen is just blank.

Another problem occurs when I open Kate after a suspend: it kills kwin!

Other than that, everything is smooth. I am beginning to think that getting an NVidia card was a bad idea. Can anyone explain what is happening?

Yep. Easy. The messages that normally pop up when you try to enable/do a suspend, warning you that the feature is buggy/experimental and known to cause problems. They mean that, and it's the truth. If it's not working 100% when you do it. DONT!

I guess I am just getting lazy. When I first started using Linux on a laptop, I would shut down instead of standby, because standby didn't work at all. Then I found suspend2, and I had a hard time getting that working, and then I found that standby worked.

It does seem to have gotten better though. It doesn't happen to much now for some reason. Of course, as soon as I say that, it will happen. But it certainly won't stop me from using Linux!
