suspend feature crashes RH 9 on thinkpad 570

Hi,
I have an ibm thinkpad 570 2644-cdu with RedHat 9.0 installed. I have everything working, including a ricochet wireless internet modem<- very pleased. Yet I still can not get the suspend feature to work. When I close my screen or manually suspend with a apm -S command, it goes down fine. Then when I reload it blinks and reboots, the system bootstrap lilo and the initial kernel are fine, but the initial kernel can not load the ext 3 hard drive and therefor cannot find the init files. Can anyone point me the right direction?
