Suse Linux 8.1 installation on Compaq Presario 900 with AMD Athlon XP board

Hi, i was trying to install suse linux 8.1 on my Compaq Presario 900 laptop with amd athlon xp board. the installation hangs as soon as it starts hardware probing. at first it cudnt c my cdwr/dvd combo drive until i told it to see it as a scsi drive. then it hangs when it its starts probing other hardware like pcmcia,usb storage,usb controller, network card, sound card, pci devices etc until i hard to disable the scripts for it not to do hardware probing. after going to hell and back, i finally installed it but with the loss of ot not ciing my network card(RTL 8139), SOUND CArd, usb, pci devices etc. Pls where can i get the download for drivers for linux on compaq or what can i do?

You might want to consider upgrading to SuSE 8.2. I installed 8.2 on a Compaq 2170 with no problems. I did disable legacy USB support in the BIOS. The only tinkering I have had to do was getting my Netgear wireless card working.

I'm having pretty much the same isue with RH9, how did you tell it to see your cd rom as a scsi drive?
