Suse Installation problems

I had hoped I could install Linux without resorting to a forum. I have Suse 10 Linux and a laptop with Windows xp. Right now that is pretty much it. I don’t want xp or anything having to do with Microsoft and suse does not give an option of partitioning and formatting the hard drive removing xp. So why not boot to dos, format the drive and install Suse. After five + hours of downloading dos iso images, iso burners and trying each one I still can not get to dos. Oh well I will just install suse and then delete xp and have a partition I don’t need. Suse gives and error about software (at this point I don’t care and will not go through another failed install to post the exact message) . I burn a new Suse iso (at a slower speed and try it again. Opps because I just unplugged the laptop, gateway, rather than shut it down properly Suse has a problem with shrinking the partition (no software error though). Boot to xp shut down properly, try to install again and Opps software error again. My question is what linux package has the ability to be installed on a laptop?

Lots of linux distros can be installed on laptops... but you seem to be going about it the wrong way. You don't need to download a dos iso (I honestly hope you're not referring to MS-DOS here!), and I'd avoid pulling the plug when it's trying to resize partitions.

Just download a SUSE iso, burn it to a disc, put it in your drive, reboot and install it (choosing to turn your whole drive into a single linux partition). And please, be patient and don't go pulling the plug when it's doing important stuff!

Also, if you want anybody to help you, it's quite necessary to write down the error messages that you receive. Just keep a pen and paper beside your computer as you're doing it. If you don't, I wouldn't expect anybody to magically guess which problems you're encountering.
