My dvd of suse 10.0 doesn't want to boot on my acer travelmate 530. I tried on my desktop computer and it works fine so it seems it's not related to the dvd itself. I checked the bios and everything is ok, the first boot device is set to my dvdrom. Is there a way to get the installation started??Floppy ?

By "dosn't boot", what do you mean? You put the dvd in the drive, your turn the laptop on, what happens?

I'll give you some examples:
I have a desktop (DELL) which refuses to boot from CD even when bios is set up to do so. Instead, it will always boot into the default OS (at the time: windows). The way I got around this was to set the boot order: floppy-cd-hdd ... I put a non-bootable floppy in the floppy drive. This gave me an error, I remove the floppy and hit any key and the machine magically boots from the cdrom.

I had an install to a compaq laptop which got as far as the boot: prompt. If I hit enter the screen went black and the system hung. I solved this by entering the screen parameters into the kernel at the boot: prompt and bootup proceeded.

When I say "doesn't boot" I meant that my DVD refuses to boot to the installation even when bios is set up to CD first. It will boot only into my grub splash screen where are my other OS(fedora/windows).
I tried the trick with the floppy disk but it didn't work for me. What could be the problem? knowing that the DVD start the installation on my other computers.

(I note that you have another distro (FC) installed...) I take it this is a new DVD-ROM drive, and your other distros were installed from an older drive which this one replaces? This is important as it suggests that it is the DVD drive rather than the BIOS primarily at fault here. (Assuming you installed the other distros from a CD or DVD.)

Can you boot anything from this drive? Have you tried a live distro?

I think the only sure test for this is to find a dvd drive which you know works in another laptop, then swap the two drives over and see.

Of course, I could be wrong and you installed fedora via a network. In which case it may well be your BIOS dosn't support isolinux. Either way, see below:

You may be able to work around this with a boot-floppy, which is set up to start the boot process on the DVD drive. I have notes about this around here somewhere - however, there are also copious instructions lying around the net too.

For eg. you can use the smart boot manager (SBM) that comes with debian-based distros.

I sounds like it is a bios problem. Your laptop does not have the DVD drive set to boot before the HD.

Did you start your laptop and go to the bios setting and change the boot sequence ?

I am not familiar with your laptop, but all laptops have a special key that you press when you starting up you computer to go to bios settings. When you go there you want to look for the boot sequence and make sure that the DVD drive is before the HD and floppy on the list.

The boot sequence in the bios is set correctly. Today I downloaded the first cdrom of suse and guess what !? the installation started! The DVD doesn't want to start but the CD works fine. That's weird, I checked the md5sum of the dvd iso image and it's fine. The DVD starts the installation on the desktop from where I burnt the iso image but strangely enough it doesn't want to boot on my laptop and my other desktop machine. It seems to be a problem with my DVD burner (VOM-12E48X). I previously burnt Fedora core 4 with the same dvd burner, the distro booted and installed without a glitch on my laptop. I guess for the time being I have to install from cd's. Would it be possible to find some sort of file to copy on a floppy for booting to the installation?

The smart boot manager is what you want. You boot from a floppy and then use the interface to change the boot to a CD or DVD drive.

At this time I solved the problem.
I set up my DVDrom to first boot device.
But my IDE cable have 2 hardver... I disconnected' the other drive (CD)..
Then my computer boot from DVD!
SUSE 10.0 Rlz!
