stuck after entering decryption key

I am pretty new to Linux and really have no idea where to go from here. Last night after restarting my computer, my screen will lock up after successfully entering the decryption key. I can see the Ubuntu logo as well as the 5 dots underneath. Once I enter the key, I get a little message that tells me it was successful and then that's it. The dots will fill up and it locks up. There are no other messages after that. I won't be to upset if I have to wipe the hdd but would prefer not to if possible. Please help me lol

Can you chroot into the system from a Live Session? Should be possible but I am not sure how the decription works for that. If so then you can probably fix your install.

Have you attempted to use recovery mode boot up? This may help.

However.

I assume you used the option for installing a fully encrypted system using LVM. I have no problem with either. But LVM is rather silly on a home PC. Learn to partition rationally or you will never learn to manage LVM rationally.

I also see no sense in full system encryption on a home PC. You would be a lot better of with a separate data partion and encrypting that.

You would also be, in my opinion, a lot better off with a distro that is not Ubuntu or Ubuntu based so as to have one that doesn't give you an automatic root prompt if you log into recovery mode. This is one thing that makes the use of full system encryption seem like a good option for Ubuntu users.

I do not think the use of sudo is in anyway better than a separate root password if used in the default manner which simply gives you FULL root permissions with simply a user password. But most non Ubuntu based systems that use sudo by default at least ask you for your user password if you boot to recovery. For obvious reasons.
