Strong password help

I am using the netbook version of Ubuntu on my Samsung NC10. It is a new installation, and as such requires the use of strong passwords. I don't want to use a password of sufficient characters. So..is there a way to either turn off the strong password requirement, or is there a way to reduce the number of characters required? If there is a way to do this, please remember you're dealing with a newbie, so I need a detailed explanation, and nothing is taken for granted. Thanks.

I don't recommend circumventing password requirements.

Sorry, I tried that already. Even as root, it requires the same number of characters as the minimum. I realise that strong passwords are a good idea, but I'm converting from another laptop, and would like to keep the passwords I have already memorized. Old dogs and new tricks, you know.
