"startx"/ Xwindows not working on DELL inspiron 1420.

Hello,

I installed a RHEL-5 client on my new DELL Inspiron 1420 to preapre for RHCE exam.

when i boot into Linux, it directly boots into text mode(runlevel-3), and if i use the command "startx" to start x-windows, OR if i try changing the runlevel to 5 ( using : init 5) - i get a error message, and it fails to start X.

"system-config-display -- reconfig" is also not fixing the problem.
Is there a way i can fix this issue..?

The error that is preventing your display from working is this:
Quote:
(II) VESA(0): Not using built-in mode "1024x768" (hsync out of range)
(II) VESA(0): Not using built-in mode "800x600" (hsync out of range)
(II) VESA(0): Not using built-in mode "640x480" (hsync out of range)
(EE) VESA(0): No valid modes
This means that neither of the three resolutions have a valid synchronistation rate for your graphics adapter.
The easiest is maybe to just leave out the fix sync rates and let X take a guess itself. This worked fairly well for me so far.
With recent versions of X, configuration became much simpler than before, when you had to know all the refresh rates of your monitor and such things.
Is this Xorg or the old X? Please post your /etc/X11/xorg.conf so I can show you where to make changes to get this working.
Maybe upgrade your packages before, since you version seems fairly old (from 2006)

Regards,
Daniel Albuschat

Ah. Hm, ok, this configuration already left finding the synchronisation rate to the X-server. What kind of video hardware is in that laptop? Maybe you can try another driver than "vesa".

I think you have several issues..

First you have an intel 965 Graphics controller and you are using the vesa driver. instead of the intel driver.

(II) VESA(0): VESA VBE OEM Product: Intel(r)GM965/PM965/GL960 Graphics Controller
(II) VESA(0): VESA VBE OEM Product Rev: Hardware Version 0.0

I don't think the intel driver for that chip is supported until kernel 2.6.22, and you are running 2.6.18 kernel.

I believe both are needed. the intel driver won't work properly in your xorg config until you upgrade the kernel if I'm reading that correctly.

Well I would skip over 2.6.22 and go to 2.6.26 if you are going to compile your own kernel....

Doesn't RHEL 5 have a newer kernel available as an RPM ?

Doesn't RHEL 5 have a newer kernel available as an RPM ?

Guess you would have to compile your own... http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kern...6.26.6.tar.bz2

Is there a particular reason you are running RHEL 5 ?
it is a commercial disto for running a stable sever.
Updates are only available with a subscription.
Other distros are more up to date and support current hardware better..
