Speaker emits feedback when running ALSA on Dell D600 / Mdk 10.0

Hi,

I am trying to use Mandrake 10.0 on a Dell Latitude D600 notebook. Whenever ALSA is running, a loud, high-pitched noise is emitted from the speakers - I assume that this noise is feedback. I can still use the computer using OSS sound, but I would prefer to use ALSA for (probably) obvious reasons. Can anybody suggest:

1. Why this is happening?
2. What I can do to fix it?

Is upgrading to a later version of ALSA likely to make any difference?

TIA,
- QS Computing.
