sound on centrino is moody

I am geting fed up with my 500m, the sound chooses to work at will, about every second or third time I boot, it fails to work producing an eror message about getting a value of 6004 (approx, I'm guessing) instead of the requested 44000. It is an Intel Corp. 82801DB AC'97 Audio Controller running the i810 oss audio driver because the alsa driver failed to produce any sound at all, It is all running on a mdk 9.2 pwp
