Sound on Armada 1750 with Mandrake 9.2
 

Hi everybody.

Ok no sound card is found during setup, after install I run sndconfig
It searches for cards dosn't fing one, so I choose the "sound blaster" and give it the following: I/O Port "0 x 220", IRQ "5", DMA "1". sndconfig then attempts to play a sound file but the following error occurs:

Following error running the modprobe program:

Now I know the sound card in this model laptop is a ESS-1688 but I heard it was soundblaster comp. and even if I do choose it the same error occurs.

So, is my problem that I have to fix the sound by rebuilding the kernel with the proper module support, I tried goofing with it last night (installed it off the mandrake disks) but when I tried running "make xconfig" it didn't work.

Any help would be appreciated, I'm still a newbie (1 week).

Also, any Ideas how to get an external mouse to work in addition to the mouse pad?

The answer to your problems are easier than you thought and (I suspect) do not involve rebuilding the kernel. I had similar issues when installing Red Hat 9 and here's what I did to get things working:

1) Make sure the CMOS settings are as follows. Under ESS 1869 Audio Controller Interface set the I/O range to 0x0230-0x0237. Under ESS 1869 Plug & Play Audiodrive use the following settings:
IRQ 5
DMA0
DMA1
I/O Range 0x0220-0x022F
I/O Range 0x0388-0x038B
I/O Range 0x0330-0x0331

Note that the above are NOT the default settings for the Armada 1750.

After changing your settings shut the laptop down so they will take effect.

2) Logon as root and run sndconfig. Sndconfig will fail to find the soundcard so just click OK. Select ESS 1688 Audiodrive from the list of soundcards and enter the following information:
I/O 220
IRQ 5
DMA 0
MPU 330

Hopefully you will then have a working sound system.
