the other that may bother you as I spruiked how model=string was the ants pants and yet assuming it worked for you,
it did not give you a headphone slider like my dell latitude

ignore the alsa version and ignore the codec as its a diff distro and diff hardware to you

http://oi43.tinypic.com/mkucg5.jpg

so when you get a chance post the output to this command pls

Code:
tail -n 5 /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

A) yes...chose KDE, I think they call it cinnamon
B) Mint 14 Nadia...chose Nadia because when I did it, I didn't want to have to fool with bugs in the latest version.
C) I knew I was running KDE -I'm comfortable with it because in the past, the most recent other Linux I had used was Kubuntu. My battery has been shot for years, and too expensive to replace when I have no great need for battery-only operation...ie, always plugged in for use.

Having made the changes to th4e mixer settings, do I close the terminal?

I'll go on to your later replies and see what next, but will watch for your reply to this as well.

If you have headphone sound, your driver is likely there and working. I only glanced over the thread, but have you used alsamixer to turn down the headphone volume and turn up / on the speakers? Pressing F1 from inside alsamixer is a help screen listing a few of the basics. But things are muted by default. And many laptop soundcards sound horrid if you push them past 90%. Plus the hardware is mostly configured to where you have to pull the headphones out to get the speakers to output sound. Not all, but most are that way. With a few that only have the headphone mixer option in alsamixer, not other mixer apps. But I don't get out much and it might have changed in that arena.

Hi Shadow_7

OP reply 17 we unmuted and raised volumes but his image has no headphone slider

Optiker
In your last image you have SPDIF enabled

this may be an error (blame me) as per
Quote:
Some cards need to have digital output muted/turned off in order to hear analog sound
from https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php...d_Architecture

so pls go to both of your SPDIFs and press m to mute both
retest speakers

if still no joy unmute the digital SPDIF as that should not have any influence on analog
retest speakers

good luck

2) if still no joy then remove that options snd_hda_intel line completely
full reboot
and play with your alsamixer now that you know what to do and try again?

I had headphone sound, but haven't checked since going through all of this. I hope I still do as it is more important than speakers for the next week. Following aus9's instructions, I have un-muted all that were muted and turned them up if they needed it or down to around 75-80%. I did find the alsamixer help, and was then able to make adjustments. I alway pulled headphones when I wanted speakers anyhow.

Thanks!

Don't know which is the digital one. Tried one, then the other. No speakers either way.

Tried it. No speakers. Headphones OK, but still crackling when there is sound, and no crackling when quiet, in headphones. I did play with the sliders both up and down from the 75-80% range. The headphone volume changed, but no change in crackling and no speakers.

FYI...There is a set of buttons on the front of the computer that used to work nicely to control volume. Also, there was a kmix control in the panel at the lower right, from which I could right-click to choose the channel for the master volume, and other stuff. Even when set to the speakers, no speaker sound, but still sound when I plugged the headphones in, and the master channel setting didn't change. Just to make sure, I closed kmix. No change in anything. I assume both alsamixer sand kmix should not both be running? My headphones have a volume control, which also changes the volume with headphones. With kmix running, both the buttons on the computer and the headphone volume control change the number showing with kmix.

Now what?

Thanks!

irrelevant they are only mixer controls, one terminal and one graphical naturally you should not try both at once,
but last time I played with kmix---yrs ago---it lacked the ability to swap my mic input to front mic/back mic/line in

2) Now what?

Firstly is this the most recent version of alsa available for mint?
use your package manager to check pls

----my alsa version is up-to-date and from memory did not have a headphone slider in v 1.0.24 maybe same for .25

2a) what is your packager called? or are you using apt-get commands?

2b Have you ever used any backup software in linux----especially either partimage or fsarchiver?
partimage has limitations such as not able to image ext4 while fsarchiver is much faster than partimage
---but is more command line stuff so I may give you some step by steps

eg My command to image my laptop drive is below --its restore below that ---I use an usb stick not sys rescue cd
Code:
sudo mount /mnt/sda3
sudo fsarchiver savefs /mnt/sda3/images/o.fsa /dev/sda1
sudo fsarchiver restfs /mnt/sda3/images/o.fsa id=0,dest=/dev/sda1
save line assumes you have a third partition and a sub-folder called images
restore line ditto and that the file o.fsa has previously been created

2c) I assume you are away from home so reluctant at this stage to download any isos?

In alsamixer, re-test sound at speakers with all these SPDIF settings

first one and second one both muted ---MM shows up
first one muted second one un-muted
first un-muted second un-muted
first un-muted second muted

2) Is there any changes in the slider etc when you had the options line in your modprobe.d?

can you show a link to image for what I assume is now your original setting pls

No, never used backup in Linux. I don't have time this morning to work on this, possibly this afternoon or tomorrow.

$ cat /proc/asound/cards

It could be actual hardware, like the headphone jack plug got stressed and the solder joints are no longer mint. If you can push on the plug and that fixes the issue, then that's likely the cause of the crackling.

A ps output would help identify what layers of audio might be competing for resources. Alsa is the driver, but things can manage your audio streams like jackd and/or pulseaudio. And in some cases artsd, esound, and others depending on what software you're using and if it's had any updates over the past ten or twenty years.

$ ps -F -A wx

I expect to be using the headphones this evening and will check that.
