sound not working in mandrake 9.1

hi everyone, i've been having alot of problems with my soundcard (i.e. nothing works) and this is my first time using linux so i'm at my ends reach.

the specs on my laptop are:

System Chip SiS 650 / SiS 961 Chipset
Audio Control Chip ALC201 AC'97 Audio CODEC

lspci -v gives me

00:02.7 Multimedia audio controller: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] SiS7012 PCI Audio Accelerator (rev a0)
Subsystem: CLEVO/KAPOK Computer: Unknown device 4201
Flags: medium devsel
I/O ports at 1c00 [size=256]
I/O ports at 1800 [size=128]
Capabilities: [48] Power Management version 2

(dunno if i should post the whole thing or what)

aumix won't open (so trying to do aumix -q is a no go)

i tried installing the package alsamixer but when i try and run it it gives me this error:

function snd_ctl_open failed for defailt: No such file or directory

so i dunno what to do now

I would be interested in seeing what modules are loaded, can you post the output of lsmod? I've read of this problem with mandrake9.1 and that sound chip elsewhere and for a few people all it ended up being was that all the volume controls were turned all the way down.

also, this topic has been discussed here before, please take a look at this link:
