Sound issue on a Dell Latitude CPx running Slackware

Neither Slackware or Red Hat is able to detect the soundcard in my Latitude CPx. Unable to play sound as root, so its not a permission issue, (I think).

Any suggestions?

What exact model do you have and what sound chipset does it use?

Pentium III 650mhz with ESS Technology ES1983S Maestro-3i PCI Audio Accelerator. Actually not sure about the exact model, but i think it's a CPi.

There is a driver called maestro3 in the kernel that supports Maestro-3 devices, including the 3i models. There is also support for the card in the Alsa project.
