Sound Card not accessible on ThinkPad 770E

I am running Mandriva Linux 2006 Free on a IBM ThinkPad 770E and my sound card will not work. It shows up in "/dev" sometimes but KDE Sound System says it does not exist. I have added my user to the "audio" group and it says permission denied. Some days when I run "sndconfig" and I probe the "Crystal CS423x Sound Chip" I get it to play the sample sound. If I try any other card it gives me a SOX error or it says that the device was not found. I have run "alsaconf" and it says no lagacy cards found. Thank you in advance.
