hi

I am not sure whats going on with your kwrite so lets go ugly....and use vi

open a terminal and do a test file first eh?

touch test
vi test
(press I to go to insert mode....insert will appear at bottom of terminal)
(type) blacklist x
(press Escape key to leave insert mode)
(press) :wq!
(you should exit that file)

to view....less test

2) If you understood what you just did....open a terminal with root powers

su
vi /etc/modprobe.d/50-blacklist.conf
(and do the stuff as per test but naming the module etc)

3) you do not use grub so can not help you.

Do a separate post in the opensuse forum asking them what is your bootloader and how to get boot codes please

1. Ah, I saw vi the other day by accident when I tried...

ed /etc/modprobe.d/50-blacklist.conf

...but I didn't know how to use it.

The I, escape and :wq! reminds me of stuff I was doing on work experience about 20 years ago on the Unix terminals...

Yes, I understood what I did.

So, after blacklist and reboot we have:

christopher@linux-rsuo:~> lsmod | grep snd
snd_pcm_oss 47343 0
snd_mixer_oss 16449 1 snd_pcm_oss
snd_seq 57073 0
snd_seq_device 6566 1 snd_seq
snd_atiixp 13922 4
snd_ac97_codec 106433 1 snd_atiixp
ac97_bus 1066 1 snd_ac97_codec
snd_pcm 86800 4 snd_pcm_oss,snd_atiixp,snd_ac97_codec
snd_timer 21318 3 snd_seq,snd_pcm
snd 64702 14 snd_pcm_oss,snd_mixer_oss,snd_seq,snd_seq_device,snd_atiixp,snd_ac97_codec,snd_pcm,snd_timer
soundcore 7013 1 snd
snd_page_alloc 7817 2 snd_atiixp,snd_pcm

3...

Thanks

hi

you do not have grub in MBR....if you can not remember what bootloader you used, you need to just login and go to forum for
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/suse-novell-60/

and ask for help there naming your distro number where to find out your bootloader stuff.....so you know what file to edit for irq stuff

2) if sound still an issue.....you could always try out other live cds......maybe pclinuxos or linuxmint might suit you or try out Ubuntu?

1. I can't remember anything about a bootloader- I may never have known.

I've managed to post a new thread on that link you gave. When you say distro number, do you mean distribution number? So, in my case, I use OpenSUSE 11.3, so my distro number is 11.3...?

2. I will try the others if all else fails. The OpenSUSE LiveCD was EXTREMELY slow.

Thanks

yes name your distro and version number......thats always good but you can edit your MYLQ at top of screen near main menu and put your details in there to save you typing it each time if you prefer.

good luck

Should be (legacy) grub - try these commands
Code:

grub-install -v
cat /boot/grub/menu.lst

May require root access.

Is this right. There seems to be some issue about grub etc...?

firstly do you agree you knew I said ...change sda to hda or whatever depending on your fstab?

post the full output of /etc/fstab

and

fdisk -l

(you may need root powers )

2) I based my reply on seeing a msdos style MBR compared to my grub style MBR.

I am not sure why you are excited by reputation, syg00 is a guru.....but it appears he not use your distro as he has not understood what you meant by bootcodes.

Why not post to opensuse forum direct.

3) Or do a clean install of a distro and pay attention to what bootloader you are requested to install and where pls?

good luck

1. I'm a bit lost here. What is fstab?

post the full output of /etc/fstab

I tried this:
cd /etc/fstab
bash: cd: /etc/fstab: Not a directory

/etc/fstab
bash: /etc/fstab: Permission denied (this was with root access)

and

fdisk -l

(you may need root powers )
Yes I need root

fdisk -l

Disk /dev/sda: 40.0 GB, 40007761920 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 4864 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x167542cb

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sda1 1 91 721920 82 Linux swap / Solaris
Partition 1 does not end on cylinder boundary.
/dev/sda2 * 91 2008 15406080 83 Linux
/dev/sda3 2008 4864 22940672 83 Linux

I still haven't got to this bit: "Try adding a cheatcode to your bootloader ...grub / grub2 like" because I don't know where the bootloader is....

er this bit...
"3) I don't think you are using grub if its a blank file....maybe lilo?

if su works for you post the output of this command....pls copy and paste and we can't afford a typo and I
will show you mine so you know what a grub looks like

Code:

su

CHANGE sda to hda or something else depending on what you see when you view your /etc/fstab please"

So

So, how do I chance my SDA to HDA without any typos? sudo ed /dev/sda?

And I still need to do this:
pci=biosirq (but thats a knoppix cheatcode or boot parameter and you may need to ask opensuse forum how to change your IRQ for your modem or sound)

Wherever that goes.

2. I don't know what reputation's about. What's a guru, anyway?

I thought I'd check the guru with you because you said "you do not have grub in MBR, and he seemed to say something about grub". Is a grub like an insect grub inside an apple?

"Why not post to opensuse forum direct." I thought I did.... will have another go...

3. I did a clean install of OpenSUSE 11.3 the other day because it stopped getting to the desktop and froze etc. This is probably something to do with the fact that it (the OS) wouldn't switch the computer off so I used to either just hold the power button down or let the battery run flat and it messed something up. The next time I do a clean install, I'll pay attention to the bootloader, but I don't ever remember being requested to install any particular bootloader. I'm assuming that something will briefly appear on the screen with this information...?

Thanks

Chris

Opensuse forum direct.

I'd tried this:

http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/suse-novell-60/

Do you mean something more like this:

http://forums.opensuse.org/

ok we may be getting somewhere.

/etc/fstab is just a file so use a text editor to open it and post the results.

2) However we now know that / (root of filesystem) is on /dev/sda2.

3) you do not change sda to hda......you only change the commands if fdisk reported a hda structure versus sda structure ok?

4) yes I meant the opensuse forum.

5) as far as I can tell, you have one drive pls confirm?

with no microsoft?

Do you need a cd to boot into your hard drive?....that is...do you leave the cd in the cd drive (or it might be a dvd) ?

(that would explain why you have no grub in MBR)

good luck

Good

1. /dev/disk/by-id/ata-TOSHIBA_MK4032GSX_464R4040T-part1 swap swap defaults 0 0
/dev/disk/by-id/ata-TOSHIBA_MK4032GSX_464R4040T-part2 / ext4 acl,user_xattr 1 1
/dev/disk/by-id/ata-TOSHIBA_MK4032GSX_464R4040T-part3 /home ext4 defaults 1 2
proc /proc proc defaults 0 0
sysfs /sys sysfs noauto 0 0
debugfs /sys/kernel/debug debugfs noauto 0 0
usbfs /proc/bus/usb usbfs noauto 0 0
devpts /dev/pts devpts mode=0620,gid=5 0 0

2. I haven't got to the bottom of root really is in Linux. I'd assumed that it was the root directory of the hard disc on from which linux is running; but "root is on /dev/sda2" seems to imply something else...?

3. What is sda and hda? I might have known once.

4. Right...

5. As far as I know, there's only one hard disc in this laptop. "with no microsoft" Did someone say something about microsoft earlier? Linux deleted windows and repartitioned (I think) the disk, formatted it and wiped it. There's no dual booting and linux is the only thing that appears after the BIOS...

I don't need a CD to boot. It seems to be properly on the computer. So, does that mean that it's running without a grub in my Master Boot Record (?).

Thanks

hi

ok well im my opinion you have a msdos partition structure showing in your MBR....but you say linux appears after bios.

so you must have a linux bootloader.

try at that menu screen pausing it....and taking a photo and uplinking somewhere such as tinypic.com ?

2) look at your files in /etc......you may have a syslinux file or a isolinux file or a lilo file

post the output of

ls -al /boot/grub

ls -al /etc/

3) since you have a UUID fstab file try posting the output of

blkid (You will need root powers for that one and if you get not found try)

ls -al /dev/disk/by-path

1. I'm not quite sure about which menu you mean, so I've uploaded these:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/53805213@N06/5019601299/
http://www.flickr.com/photos/53805213@N06/5019600379/ (is all the 2.6. whatever after 11.3 my full distro number?)
http://www.flickr.com/photos/53805213@N06/5020208496/
http://www.flickr.com/photos/53805213@N06/5020208880/

Setting up loopback interface IP address etc on the clicky text screen.... need I worry about these being public? They don't look random enough for real ip addresses. Is this just internal/temporary?

Is one of these what you meant? There's also a little menu for selecting which disc to boot from, but that's on HDD and the CD drawer is open...

hi

well the second photo shows a bootloader that appears to be the grub-gfxmenu based on grub-legacy.

2) it shows your distro number and then your current kernel number.

weird.....your mbr output does not show grub at all?

maybe its in the Partition boot record?

try

sudo dd if=/dev/sda1 bs=512 count=1

or su then the dd command and post results pls

3) moving on....you have /boot/grub/menu.lst and you have /etc/grub.conf

but grub.conf does not show a symbolic link (right hand side should show > /boot/grub/menu.lst)

so now post the contents of your

/boot/grub/menu.lst and
/etc/grub.conf

4) local ips can not be seen by external forces....you are safe.

5) You have a screenshot showing your system appears to be recovering from a stored state...resume....I wonder if that explains it?
I don't use any resume facility.

6) /etc/fstab showing UUID and blkid means when you publish your grub(s)
the kernel line is likely to read
