Sound and CD-Rom -- Ubuntu 9.04 and Asus K50IJ-X006 laptop

Hi,

I am having trouble with my Ubuntu 9.04 on my Asus K50IJ-X006 laptop. The installation went smoothly, however, I am having trouble mounting the cd-rom as well as having sound played. The laptop came with drivers, but the drivers are ONLY Vista based. Oddly enough, the cd-rom had worked fine during installation of Ubuntu.

The following are an example of two terminal sessions regarding my cd-rom:

E: Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead.

The sound just does noes work at all. I am thinking that I need the appropriate and compatible driver, or perhaps lines of code would do the trick.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am quite frankly sick and tired of Windows and would love to make Ubuntu work for me.

Try the following in a terminal
ls -l /dev/cdrom
This should give a line like
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 3 2009-09-06 16:00 /dev/cdrom -> hda
that last bit is your cdrom device, in my case, hda. then
sudo modprobe iso9660
sudo mount /dev/whatever /mnt/
Tell us how this breaks down and what each error is.
