Sorry for silly Qs - which better, Sempron or Intel Celeron M laptop?

hi

sorry for the silly questions

i just finished googling for comparasion between AMD Sempron vs Intel Celeron M laptop, but without success. Any idea which is better in-terms of performance & battery life?

It seem that Intel Celeron M 1.3GHz if running in WinXP Pro S2, the battery can only last for 1hr+, however in Suse9.3 Pro, it can last around 2hrs. Running under Suse seem to be cooler for Celeron compared to WinXP. Not sure if this is just my own observation or general behaviour of the chips.

I m thinking of getting a new laptop with AMD Sempron 2800+ just to check out, but dont have budget at the moment :p kekeke ... any idea what's the benchmark between AMD Sempron2800+ vs Athlon900? cant seem to google it.

any helps or suggestions are extremely appreciated :)

regards

Not sure where you got your info about the Celeron M 1.3, but I can tell you that my Dell Inspiron 2200, which has a Celeron M 1.3 in it, averages around 3.5 hours of battery life (with continuous wifi use), when it was running XP Home. Now with a full Mepis install i'm pulling slightly more, at around 3.75 hrs.

don't know much about Sempron, but I've been very happy with my Celeron both performance and battery-wise.

good luck on your decision!

Hi ollywompus

i got mine from Acer - the model is Extensa2350. Not sure why, but the battery doesnt seem to hold up very long. very easily drained! the PC specs as follow

Intel(R) Celeron(R) M Processor 1.30GHz, 400 MHz FSB, 1MB L2 cache
14.1 XGA TFT LCD
Acer Incorporated [ALI] 855 GM with AGP (enabled)
HTS424040M9AT00 40GB HDD
DVD/CR-RW combo drive
512MB DDR RAM (I upgrade the 256MB DDR to 512MB)
built in wifi - 802.111b/g by Inprocomm.

may be my battery is an old one - swapped by the seller ?? hmm, may be i go drop an email to acer to inquiry why the fast depleting battery power.

gotta go liao, thx for ur feedback! :)

My Toshiba Satellite M35X uses the Celeron-M 1.3GHz too. First of all, the MHz is deceiving, because according to SiSoft Sandra benchmarks its approximately equivalent to an Athlon 1600+ performance-wise. Secondly, the processor doesn't "speedstep" like the AMD, it runs at full speed all the time whether plugged in or on battery power. Surprisingly, that makes it about as fast as my 3200+, which steps down to 800Mhz when on battery power. Thirdly, the power supply is tiny and I've had no problems working 3 hours on batteries, compared to about 1.5 hours max on my AMD64 laptop.

So, in short, while I haven't used the Sempron, based on my experience, AMD's mobile chips are sub-par.

Yeah, that definitely sounds like a bad battery... you may want to see if you can get a new OEM one from Acer... it should at least be pulling 2hrs I would think...

Well i have a Smepron 200+ actually and the only difference betwene it and a similar Athlon 64 1.6ghz processor is the lower amount of RAM and Lack of 64 bit extentions. Performance wise due to the memroy controller being on board the lack of cache does not hurt as much as it does with a Celeron M. Battery life for me is about 3-3.5 hours. I have a HP zv5000 with a GeForce 4 MX 420 32mb video card which effects the battery life as well.
