Sony Vaio VGN-AR760 laptop, no sound through hedphones

I have a Sony Vaio VGN-AR760 running Ubuntu 8.04.1 . When I plug in my headphones sound continues to come out the built-in speakers only. I am using ALSA. I have used Pulse as well, but that has the same problem, and gave me other problems as well. The audio works normally in Vista. The headphones work fine too. I have tried several different kinds of headphones. I am plugging them into the correct jack. I have muted and un-muted all of the channels. I have tried installing the latest ALSA from source. The sound card is an HDA Intel, with a RealTek ALC262. I know that this has been an ongoing problem with many laptops with simmilar cards.

compile alsa from source with the correct options and check.

I already did, as I noted when I stated the thread. It made no difference.
