Sony PCG-F540 video/DVD problems in 16 bit color

I have Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy with Gnome and most things are working fine. When I try to play a DVD or DivX videos (and probably others), Mplayer or Totem will just close. I traced it to the fact that my color in xorg.conf is set to 16 bits. I did this to improve overall video performance. If I set it to 24 bits, I can play videos and DVD's but web page scrolling and everything else suffers and youtube, which is already bad, is unwatchable. Should I have a driver installed for my video chip? Here's the info from lshw:

*-display UNCLAIMED
description: VGA compatible controller
product: NM2230 [MagicGraph 256AV+]
vendor: Neomagic Corporation
physical id: 0
bus info: pci@0000:01:00.0
version: 30
width: 32 bits
clock: 33MHz
capabilities: pm vga_controller bus_master cap_list
configuration: latency=128 maxlatency=255 mingnt=16
Any help is appreciated.
Just a thought - would it help to uninstall/reinstall Totem Movie Player with the color depth set to 16 bit?

Update: I'm not sure what I did but changing xorg.conf forced me into a screen at startup I have never seen before and can't seem to get back to again. It was a configuration screen for video and I was able to specify the type of video card and display I have. It still reports the same in lshw but Youtube, DivX, and DVD all play fine now at 24 bits. Anyone know how to get back to that sceen if I ever have to reinstall Ubuntu?
Chris
