Snags with Fedora on Inspiron 3500

Hello! I have only recently started to learn about Linux, and decided to try to install Fedora Core 1 on my Inspiron 3500 laptop as a "test box" before I make the big step and install it on my desktop computer. However, I'm having a couple of minor problems with the laptop.

The first is the sound. A few searches on the web (and even in these forums) show that the Inspiron 3500 sound card just doesn't like Linux. I've noticed a few workarounds, but I keep seeing repeated references to something called "soundconf", which I can't seem to find anywhere in Fedora. Can anyone help me figure out where I can find and run soundconf, or help me with a solution to get sound working?

Secondly is the ethernet card. When I first installed Fedora, it actually worked - I was able to access the RHN right away and get all of the relevant updates. However, the next night I went to work on the sound card problem, and I'm not getting any "tone" at all to the ethernet card. I've checked the hub and the cord, and it's not either of those.

If you need more information on this problem or the one above, just let me know what you need and I'll get it for you (probably tomorrow night, since I have class after work tonight).

Thank you in advance for your help, and please be patient with me - I am a total newbie to Linux.
