Small Linux Distro For Old Dell Latitude CP (NO CD-ROM drive)

Hey all,

I have an old Dell Latitude CP laptop with 6GB hard drive, 64MB of RAM, and a P133-233MHz (haven't taken the time to look up the CPU speed). I'm looking for a easy-going distro to install on the system. The CD-ROM drive I have for the system does NOT read CDs. The only thing I have is a floppy drive, and a Netgear FA310TX PCMCIA card.

I have tried Damn Small Linux, but I have an issue with video (screen turns all green when entering init 5 - I'm waiting on forum approval to seek help there).

Do you guys happen to have any other suggestions that meet the above criteria?

Thanks

you can use pcmia install...slackware may be the best for this?

first you need a boot disk
http://www.slackware.com/install/bootdisk.php has instructions on how to make floppies

then a root disk
http://www.slackware.com/install/rootdisk.php
pcmcia.dsk is the name of the other disk you will need to enable network install

but sbootmgr.dsk can be used to re-enable faulty drivers? on you cdrom and you could try to do a cd install?

I am not saying this is guaranteed....but makes sense to try only the sboot floppy first instead of a boot then root floppy....because this floppy if it enables your cd...can maximise the number of install cds you can try.

2) pls check your bios for any option of bios boot order set to optical drive first....its sometimes forgotten by some people to check

Perhaps you can install a virtual machine such as qemu and run damn small linux within windows to avoid the video problem:

Do you have a second computer? If so, then the best option might be to do a Debian netboot install. This involves a bootfloppy for PXE boot (assuming your BIOS doesn't already natively support PXE boot--it probably doesn't, considering how old it is), and setting up a second computer on the local network as DHCP and tftp server.
