Slow window redraw with Mobility Radeon 9000

I'm having issues with my Clevo 5600D laptop (Sager 5660). I can't get XOrg window rendering to work well. Whenever I resize windows (grab the corner and move it around) it redraws slowly. XChat2 gets about 4fps, GIMP only gets around 1 or 2fps but XTerm isn't too bad, but whenever you do any of those the CPU usage rockets to 100% as well, resizing Firefox windows is also 1 or 2fps. Scrolling in Firefox is also slow as hell.

I've tried the opensource Radeon drivers with XOrg 7.1 and the fglrx ATi driver (version 8.28.8 because ATi dropped support for anything below the 9500 in their later drivers) but neither work well that well, the official ATi drivers a bit better than the OpenSource driver.

The second issue (but this is the odd thing, it even happened under Windows) is that with the official ATi drivers, in game such as Quake 3 (and GTA3 under Windows), the mouse has about 1 second lag (not exagerating, it may be a little worse than that) which as you can tell makes games kinda impossible. But I have less hope of fixing this. One correlation though is that it gets worse the higher the screenmode (regardless of the FPS, which is normally fine).

So any ideas about either issue?
