slmodem woes
Hello! I'm using slmodem to connect to the internet with my AC' 97 Modem. There is no problem there, but the problem is with maintaining a stable connection. For a few minutes I will get a decent connection speed, and then for a few minutes I can't get anything, and while browsing websties I get DNS lookup errors and things of that nature, and my connections are timing out.
Below is the output from lspci, so you will know what hardware I'm using: 00:00.0 Host bridge: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] 661FX/M661FX/M661MX Host (rev 11) 00:01.0 PCI bridge: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS]: Unknown device 0003 00:02.0 ISA bridge: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] SiS85C503/5513 (LPC Bridge) (rev 25) 00:02.5 IDE interface: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] 5513 [IDE] 00:02.6 Modem: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] AC'97 Modem Controller (rev a0) 00:02.7 Multimedia audio controller: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] Sound Controller (rev a0) 00:03.0 USB Controller: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] USB 1.0 Controller (rev 0f) 00:03.1 USB Controller: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] USB 1.0 Controller (rev 0f) 00:03.3 USB Controller: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] USB 2.0 Controller 00:05.0 Network controller: RaLink: Unknown device 0201 (rev 01) 00:07.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. Please, Help.. |
what are you using to connect to the net, wvdial, pon/poff, or something else? It would also help to know what kind of laptop & distro you are using.
|
I'm using Slackware - Current version I think, and kppp to connect to the internet.
|
I don't know if kppp uses wvdial for its backend or not. I do know that with slmodems you should have "Carrier Check = no" (without quotes) in your /etc/wvdial.conf. Also, depending on the quality of the phone line, if the port speed is set too high (like 460800) you should lower it to 115200 or even 57600.

Awesome. I got wvdial to compile and tried using it as well, but when
I run wvdialconfig I get this output: wvdialconf /etc/wvdial.conf Scanning your serial ports for a modem. Port Scan<*1>: S0 S1 S2 S3 S4 S5 S6 S7 Port Scan<*1>: S8 S9 S10 S11 S12 S13 S14 S15 Port Scan<*1>: S16 S17 S18 S19 S20 S21 S22 S23 Port Scan<*1>: S24 S25 S26 S27 S28 S29 S30 S31 ttySL0<Info>: Cannot get information for serial port. Port Scan<*1>: SL0 USB0 USB1 Sorry, no modem was detected! Is it in use by another program? Did you configure it properly with setserial? Please read the FAQ at http://open.nit.ca/wvdial/ If you still have problems, send mail to wvdial-list@lists.nit.ca. I'm using slmodem, so my modem is on /dev/SL0, kppp seems to have no problem with this, any ideas? |
I read something about kde & wvdial not working well together. Did you ever try running pppsetup as root?
Also, try going to this link, if you haven't already http://www.slackware.com/config/ppp.php |
