slmodem woes
 

Hello! I'm using slmodem to connect to the internet with my AC' 97 Modem. There is no problem there, but the problem is with maintaining a stable connection. For a few minutes I will get a decent connection speed, and then for a few minutes I can't get anything, and while browsing websties I get DNS lookup errors and things of that nature, and my connections are timing out.

Once I get my modem and Direct 3D working my Laptop will be a fully functional Linux Machine. Please, Help..

what are you using to connect to the net, wvdial, pon/poff, or something else? It would also help to know what kind of laptop & distro you are using.

I'm using Slackware - Current version I think, and kppp to connect to the internet.

I don't know if kppp uses wvdial for its backend or not. I do know that with slmodems you should have "Carrier Check = no" (without quotes) in your /etc/wvdial.conf. Also, depending on the quality of the phone line, if the port speed is set too high (like 460800) you should lower it to 115200 or even 57600.

Awesome. I got wvdial to compile and tried using it as well, but when
I run wvdialconfig I get this output:

Sorry, no modem was detected! Is it in use by another program?
Did you configure it properly with setserial?

I'm using slmodem, so my modem is on /dev/SL0, kppp seems to have
no problem with this, any ideas?

I read something about kde & wvdial not working well together. Did you ever try running pppsetup as root?
