Slackware On IBM Thinkpad R51


Hi
Greetings to all .... Am newbie to Linux .. Just tried to install slackware (10.xx) in my IBM R51 thikpad , I had few Doubts ....

1. When evr i boot linux i need to key in "telinit 4" to invoke the K desktop... How can i automate it ?

2. I cant able to connect to internet both in wireless and wired LAN ... How to configure ?

3. I cant play any audio files .. i think that the sound card is not activated /detected by linux ...
how to overcome this ....

I find lot of Linux genius here Can u Guys can help me

As for #1, just edit /etc/inittab and set the default runlevel to 4.

For #3, did you try to run alsamixer and unmute the main channel? I often times have to unmute that channel and turn up the volume after installs. To save your settings, just run the command (as root) alsactl store.

slackware linux network

Thanks .. I ve make it done the startup of desktop ....
CAn anyone help me on on How to connect to Network .. I think my Network card also cant able to detect by slackware linux ..

and also it shows the rest of other hardwares....

doesnt answer anything ... and no errors

for
#iwconfig
#lo no wireless extensions



pls help

i do have linksys wireless router not encrypted .. am using it for windows and works nicely


I do have no sound in my linux OS ... and USB drive cant detect ..

can help

hi there,
i think you need to install ipw2100 modules in your system. are you using the slackware vanilla kernel?
do you have wireless tools installed?

IPW 2100 driver Installation

Hi thanks
Am using kernel versiion 2.6.14.5 ... and i downloaded ipw driver ... am not sure how to install it ... can u pls help

similarly My audio also not working and also USB ports .. but lspci command it detects all the hardware ...

Is it possible to help Thanks

hi there,
about the usb and sound i think it is related to the new kernel that you are using.
afaik, slackware is still built under 2.4.XX kernel series.
if you intend to use alsa and other things you need to "adapt" it to your kernel 2.6.XX.
where did you get ipw2100 module? how the file is called? is it the source code?
i don't want to sound rude but maybe you should try another distro. slackware needs a bit of knowledge to be usable.
