skittish ubuntu

I loaded the latest ubu and xfce because its fast especially with Opera. My network manager was all screwed up... it worked but wouldnt display. I let it sit overnight and when I booted it came up in triple.
But this time I could delete them 1 at a time. Yesterday it would delete the whole indicator group....
Ubuntu is like that....it is weird when you load it, always has been.
I tried Bodhi but was unimpressed. And it wasnt any faster.
I downloaded Mint just in case. I run a 10 year old laptop.
Anyway I have always liked that I can reload ubuntu every few months
and its so easy. Only takes 20 minutes. Not like Windows.
Was wondering if having NM and WICD in the tray at the same time is a no no.???? And where is some really good icons for Ubuntu desktop??

Having wicd and NM on the same box introduces an unnecessary complication. Only one of them will make a connection at a time; the other will simply reflect what the dominant? alpha? one is doing.

At least, that was my experience when I was in the process of removing NM and installing wicd and had both of them on the same box for about 10 minutes.

rtvhg43, if you install multiple network managers, you will have multiple icons, that's for sure.
not sure if that's what you did.

Different distros behave differently with the same desktop. With Xfce, the range in my tests is from
AntiX MX: 1% CPU, 120 GB
to
Manjaro: 5% CPU, 180 GB

Have a look at Salix. That's not Debian-based: it's Slackware with added user-friendliness and a bigger repository. I use that on a Pentium III Thinkpad that's older that your laptop.
