Setting eth0 timeout, Mandrake 9.2 on Inspiron 8200

Alright, I'm using Mandrake 9.2, and on bootup when I don't have a cable plugged into my ethernet card, it hangs as it tries to bring up eth0 for about 1-2 minutes, then gives up and continues. Now, my question is, how can i set it to abandon eth0 after say, 5-10 seconds? I read somewhere that all you have to do is put 'DHCP_TIMEOUT=5' in your /sbin/ifup file, but this doesn't do it for me. any suggestions? Thanks in advance.
