After connecting the projector, reboot. Then run your graphic configuration wizard and see if the projector is detected. ( Sorry, I don't have Ubuntu so I don't know what that would be. ) I've found that I even need to power cycle my Sony Stereo if I plug in the video svideo cable for the video to show up. Maybe it isn't necessary for a VGA output, but this will eliminate one potential problem.
Also post your xorg.conf file. Please past it in between [ code ] .. [ /code ] blocks so that it is more readable and retains the whitespace.
Also indicate what graphics card your computer uses. Nvidia has twinview statements that you use.
