Bottom end of the Lenovo ThinkPad range. Unless you want to spend more, then further up the ThinkPad range.

Review the models that IBM, HP and Dell sell with Linux on them.. if you can buy it from them with Linux on it, then you should be able to load any distro you want on it with a high degree of success.

I recommended a Compaq that was around $538 in another thread, and the guy picked it up and reported that it was working wonderfully he couldn't be happier.

Do your research !! best of luck to you.

Compaq or any of later HP or IBM
if possible, don't buy with ATI on it.

nvidia is known to have better support for linux than ati. Do a search and many threads will recommand to stay away from ati (with motivation).

Many of those 'ATI doesn't work' threads ae pretty old. I believe support has improved greatly.

That being said, personally given the choice, I would take a nVidia controller over ATI, because that is what I have always used and Linux support has been awesome. I've got nVidia cards from TNT2 through Geforce 6800 and they have all worked flawlessly in Linux. One of these days I'll upgrade my system so I can move past the AGP limitation of the 6800 cards (nVidia doesn't make anything newer for AGP anymore.. )

Intrepid should have automaticaly detected that video controler and should be using it..
cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep autoconfigured

it should return something like...
Code:
(==) Matched intel for the autoconfigured driver
Which shows that the system is using the proper driver for that graphics controller.

wine is for running windows applications on Linux, is that what you want to do ?
Or what exactly are you looking to do with the system ?

one more thing, I think the speakers doesn't work efficiently because the sound doesn't loud enough; when I use audaciuos the sound was even less with rythmbox....is it because of the different driver for sound card....it seem in the audacious it use pulse audio and for the rythmbox I think the ALSA....any comment???

what is the difference between those huh guys....???

Thanx!!
